If you haven’t heard yet, NOW is the best time to visit Japan. Unfortunately, the Yen has been losing its value compared to the US Dollar. What that means is your money goes further, a lot further. While the Yen is low, visiting provides a way to stimulate the economy and give back to local businesses.

Our journey began with an exhilarating flight from LA to Tokyo, where we were greeted by the vibrant energy of the bustling metropolis. Our home base in Shinjuku for the week provided the perfect launching pad for our adventures in Tokyo. Let’s get into it.
Taylor Swift Eras Tour: The Taylor Swift concert added an unexpected layer of excitement to our Tokyo adventure and was the start to our Japan trip. Despite not planning for it, we were thrilled to have the chance to experience her performance live. The energy in the Tokyo Dome was infectious, and being surrounded by passionate fans made the night even more memorable. It was a spontaneous decision that turned into one of the highlights of our trip.
Meiji Jingu: We took a visit to the serene Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine nestled amidst lush greenery in the heart of the city. The towering torii gates and tranquil atmosphere offered a peaceful respite from the urban hustle and bustle.
Yoyogi Park: Next, we ventured to the expansive Yoyogi Park, where we marveled at the beauty of cherry blossoms and enjoyed a leisurely stroll. The park’s vast open spaces and serene ponds provided a welcome escape from the city’s frenetic pace.
teamLab Planets: Our senses were dazzled at teamLab Planets, an immersive digital art exhibition that transported us to otherworldly realms. From interactive light displays to mesmerizing projections, each installation sparked wonder and awe.
Imperial Palace: We delved into history at the Imperial Palace, the former residence of Japan’s imperial family. Surrounded by moats and lush gardens, the palace offered a glimpse into Japan’s regal past and architectural splendor.
Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Dome: Admired panoramic views from Tokyo Tower and indulged in the electrifying atmosphere at Tokyo Dome for the Taylor Swift concert. From the towering heights of Tokyo Skytree to the culinary delights found in every corner, Tokyo captivated our hearts at every turn.
Kyoto Escapades:
Boarding the bullet train to Kyoto, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Japanese countryside, with Mount Fuji looming majestically in the distance. In Kyoto, we immersed ourselves in the city’s rich cultural heritage and timeless beauty.
Fushimi Inari Taisha: Our first stop was the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha, where thousands of vermillion torii gates formed a mesmerizing pathway through the forested hillside. The spiritual ambiance and striking scenery made it a highlight of our trip.
Kinkaku-ji: At Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, we marveled at the shimmering reflection of the temple in the tranquil pond. The iconic structure, adorned in gold leaf, exuded a sense of tranquility and majesty.
Ryoan-ji Hojo Teien (Rock Garden): We marveled at the iconic Rock Garden, a masterpiece of minimalist design and Zen philosophy. The meticulously raked gravel surrounding 15 carefully placed rocks evoked a sense of tranquility and contemplation. Sitting in silent admiration, we embraced the serenity of this UNESCO World Heritage site, finding peace amidst the hustle and bustle of Kyoto’s vibrant streets.
Samurai Class: Stepping back in time, we participated in a samurai class, learning the art of the sword and gaining insight into Japan’s feudal past. The immersive experience allowed us to connect with Japan’s rich history and traditions.
Kyoto Imperial Palace: The Kyoto Imperial Palace offered a glimpse into the lives of Japanese emperors, with its grand halls, sprawling gardens, and historical significance. Walking in the footsteps of royalty, we felt a deep sense of reverence for Japan’s regal heritage.
Kiyomizu-dera Zenkojido: Kiyomizu-dera Zenkojido provided spiritual solace amidst stunning mountain vistas. The temple’s elevated location offered panoramic views of Kyoto, making it a serene and picturesque destination.
Kamo River: We wandered along the picturesque Kamo River, savoring the tranquility of our surroundings. The riverbanks, lined with cherry trees and traditional tea houses, offered a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Nijō Castle: Nijō Castle, Togetsukyo Bridge, and the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama were just a few more highlights of our Kyoto adventure. Each destination showcased Japan’s rich history, natural beauty, and cultural diversity.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest: Nestled in the heart of Kyoto, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is a breathtaking natural attraction renowned for its towering bamboo groves. During our visit, we strolled along the serene pathways, surrounded by the majestic bamboo stalks that swayed gently in the breeze. The ethereal ambiance of the forest provided a tranquil escape, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature and create cherished memories of our time in Kyoto.
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayam: Perched atop Mount Arashiyama, the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama offers a unique opportunity to observe Japanese macaques in their natural habitat. Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by friendly monkeys roaming freely amidst lush greenery. We enjoyed feeding them from a safe distance and marveled at the panoramic views of Kyoto below, making our visit a memorable wildlife encounter combined with stunning scenery.
Hokan-ji Temple: Nestled in the heart of Kyoto’s bustling streets, Hokan-ji Temple, also known as Yasaka Pagoda, stands as a serene sanctuary amidst the urban landscape. As we ascended the temple grounds, the towering pagoda, surrounded by vibrant foliage, captivated our gaze. Stepping inside, we were enveloped by a sense of tranquility, offering a moment of respite from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Culinary Delights: And of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without sampling some of the city’s best ramen, a culinary delight that left our taste buds tingling with delight. From savory broths to tender noodles, each bowl offered a tantalizing taste of Japanese cuisine.
Reflecting on the Journey:
Our two weeks in Japan were a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences, from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto. Each day brought new adventures and discoveries, deepening our appreciation for Japan’s rich culture and history. Japan had captured our hearts, and we knew that our journey was just the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the Land of the Rising Sun.
