Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel
We live about halfway between Frankfurt and Berlin and one of the things we miss the most is having immediate access to an international airport. Morning flights for us always mean traveling to Frankfurt or Berlin the evening before and staying at a hotel in close proximity to the airport.
Over the years, the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel has almost become a “home away from home” since we stay there so much. It also holds a special place in our hearts because we always associate it with the start of a great trip!
We recently found ourselves there again before a trip to Southeast Asia and Western Australia. Sheraton Hotels are part of the Starwood brand of hotels (soon to be Marriott). The Sheraton Frankfurt is a real bargain when redeeming Starwood points at only 7,000 points per night.
The location of the Sheraton simply cannot be beat. It is directly connected to Terminal 1 at Frankfurt airport as well as the regional and long distance train stations. You can leave your room and be in the terminal checking in for your flight 5 minutes later.
Above the long distance train station, there is a shopping and office area called The Squaire. There are numerous restaurants, shops, a supermarket and a drug store located here.
Many travelers with long layovers will take the train into the city center for a traditional German meal. The Squaire is home to a traditional German restaurant and pub where travelers can avoid having to go into Frankfurt. We personally have not eaten there, but have read good reviews.
We normally head to the supermarket, called Rewe, right above the train station. Here you can buy something to drink (water, beer, wine…) and something to eat. Usually, we buy a good German beer and pick a few items from salad bar and eat it in our room. They have a great selection of food, not just the salad bar. If you have an early flight, you can grab something the night before if you want to eat something a bit healthier than a pastry or fast food at the airport.
The Sheraton Frankfurt Airport is a very large hotel with over 1,000 rooms and numerous restaurants. It is a busy place with people coming and going at all hours. The common areas are somewhat basic but very clean and the staff is always very friendly and helpful.
There are also a few restaurants in the hotel, but we’ve only had room service or had our meal from the supermarket. Right around the corner from reception is a sports bar and a cigar bar. We usually redeem our free drink instead of receiving bonus points, as the bar is great for people watching.
The rooms are pretty standard, but always very clean and comfortable. There is a coffee maker and a refrigerator, which we find useful. You can also request a view facing the airport. The hotel guarantees that the windows are sound proof and they really are. We haven’t had any problems with noise from the airport traffic.
As mentioned above, the hotel is a bargain when redeeming Starwood points or if one can find a good cash rate. Frankfurt hosts many large conferences and trade shows so the hotel can also be expensive at times when there is a major event taking place.
We love this hotel for the convenient location, comfort, and consistency. It is great being able to just walk into the airport quickly, instead of taking a shuttle bus. We have always had a wonderful sleep here, although we might be a bit biased since it is usually night 1 of our vacation.
