Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit Hotel
Over the past few years, we have frequently passed through Bangkok and have found one of our all time favorite hotels in the Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit hotel. We always enjoy coming to Bangkok and this hotel plays a big part in that. Here are a few reasons why:
For us, the Thonglor location of this hotel is perfect. As visitors to Bangkok know, traveling around the city can be a daunting task because of all the congestion. Being able to use the BTS Skytrain is a blessing and this hotel is located just a short distance from the Thonglor station on Sukhumvit. The Skytrain will connect you to all the major destinations on Sukhumvit as well as the river.
Thonglor is also one of our favorite neighborhoods in Bangkok with plenty of great restaurants and bars. We always enjoy strolling around the neighborhood and seeing what’s new since the last time we visited.
Comfort is the first word that comes to mind when describing the rooms. Not only is it warm and inviting aesthetically, but every element in the room is about comfort. The bed is an amazing mass of pillows and plush sheets. The bathroom includes a wonderful bathtub overlooking Bangkok, and of course, our favorite, the incredible rain shower. We might come to Bangkok just to shower here, that’s how much we love it! The products smell amazing. The room also includes a mini refrigerator and coffee maker.
We are part of the Marriott Rewards program and have been Gold Members for the past 3 years. We truly love the benefits of this program, as it allows us to have free breakfast and access to the Lounge (located on the 40th floor). The lounge offers breakfast, teatime, warm snacks, and complimentary alcoholic drinks between 5:30-9:30 pm. We usually enjoy the warm snacks and a few glasses of wine at night. They offer a good “main” snack, which could include pasta, curries, roast, sushi, and much more. Also on offer, are 2 smaller options of warm snacks and 2 salad samplers. The dessert table is filled with exotic fruit and delicious cakes, mousses, candy, and cookies. The lounge attendants are so friendly and accommodating. They truly make the experience there very nice.
Since we stay here during the Christmas holiday, the lounge is usually packed with people. It’s not very big in size, so you’re lucky if you can score a table, especially one with a view. However, after New Year, it’s empty and quiet! We noticed that this year they do not allow children inside the lounge, but don’t worry if you have children, they have created an area in the lobby to accommodate this situation.
Dining and Drinking:
On the 45-49th floor of this hotel, is Octave, their rooftop bar. Guests, tourists, expats, and locals frequent the bar every evening, which means it’s always packed. We recommend heading up for the beautiful sunset views and the happy hour deals.
Even though breakfast is included in our rate, we would encourage anyone to try it at least once if it’s not included. It is worth every baht. The spread consists of a Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Western, and Indian breakfast. A noodle bar sits in the middle as well.
Grab a pastry from the wide selection if you feel inclined. As previously mentioned, we love the rain shower and lounge access, but truly the breakfast is by far our favorite part of this hotel. Don’t pass up the Indian hot breakfast either. It’s always a vegetarian option served with delicious rice and even better coconut chutney. One of us (we won’t say who) would usually eat about 3 plates from the Indian selection every morning…it’s that good!
In the same location as the breakfast, the hotel also serves a buffet dinner. Sometimes the meals are themed, from BBQ, to Thai, to seafood night. Sadly, we were usually so stuffed from the snacks in the lounge and eager to eat at Fifty-Fifth that we have never tried the dinner buffet…don’t worry it’s still on our radar!
As soon as the doors are opened for you on your way into the hotel, you are greeted not only by the smiling staff, but also by a wave of the most wonderful scents. Whatever they diffuse the air with is delectable. The staff is so kind and accommodating. Helping with any and every move you make. The lobby is spacious and always nicely decorated for Christmas.
The pool is located on the 7th floor, by the fitness center (sorry, we didn’t enter there…) and spa. It’s a large pool that overlooks some of the city and is well shaded with umbrellas. Sadly, we only visited the pool once on our last day to soak up the sun and enjoy our last Singha. It’s great if you want to spend some time relaxing and swimming.
This is hands down one of our favorite city hotels anywhere. While it is no longer the newest Marriott property in Bangkok, it is a solid choice. The fantastic service, location, comfort of the room, and delicious breakfast keep us coming back time and time again.
